Arnbjerg Pavillonen - Our sustainable ambition with the hotel

Climate and environment

At Arnbjerg, we have an ambitious vision to become the most sustainable hotel and restaurant on the West Coast. It’s a commitment. That’s why we’re constantly making choices that can strengthen our vision, and one of the biggest decisions was to become Green Key Certified

. Green Key Certification requires hotels and restaurants to meet a number of strict criteria, which we have been working hard on recently. You can read more about some of them below.

Biodiversity

Our biodiversity in Denmark is especially threatened by human activities. Population growth, agriculture and forestry, as well as growing cities and expanding infrastructure, leave very little space for nature’s diversity. At Arnbjerg, we are also limited by our location in the city and park, and we have limited outdoor space at our disposal. So back in 2021, we had a crazy idea to let a little biodiversity move onto Arnbjerg’s roofs.

One of the areas that threatened our biodiversity was also the dwindling number of bees, and this was the starting point for the project with beehives on the roof of Arnbjerg. That idea has since taken shape and resulted in a great collaboration with one of our local beekeepers, who every spring places 5 hives on our roof with 10,000 happy bees. For the benefit of garden owners, the park and not least our guests, who can enjoy local honey from our own roof.

Waste sorting

At Arnbjerg, we are aware of our responsibility and we work every day to minimize our waste and not least waste. One of the criteria for Green Key certification included an increased focus on waste sorting. One of the areas where restaurants have the biggest footprint is in the form of food waste and especially packaging. Even though we constantly optimize our menus and strive to use as much of our ingredients as possible, it’s inevitable that we still have some waste. Therefore, it makes sense for us to focus on waste sorting and thus recycling.

Therefore, it was a natural step on our green journey to introduce waste sorting throughout Arnbjerg, from the kitchen and restaurant to our hotel rooms.

And our journey of thinking of waste as a resource certainly doesn’t end here. Today, we want to sort our waste further into two fractions to achieve even better utilization of our waste. Unfortunately, we also have to admit that our ambitions in a sustainable direction are sometimes challenged by a lack of technology, knowledge, etc.

Refood

At Arnbjerg, we are aware that all waste is a resource, which is why it makes so much sense for us to be part of Daka’s ReFood program. Here, together with Daka ReFood, we ensure that our food waste is recycled rather than incinerated. In this way, our waste today is added new value and can be used for biogas, biodiesel and fertilizer.

Air to water heat pump

At Arnbjerg, we have chosen to take a focused approach to our resource consumption in the form of energy and heat. Therefore, in 2023 we installed an air-to-water heat pump to further improve energy efficiency. At Arnbjerg, we have many large surfaces with windows, which naturally causes large fluctuations in cold/heat in our premises. Our new heat pump circulates the naturally occurring heat around the premises. This way, we harness natural energy instead of adding new energy.

We call it common sense.

Therefore, it was a natural step on our green journey to introduce waste sorting throughout Arnbjerg, from the kitchen and restaurant to our hotel rooms.
